Tech_Noir -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 10:00:38 AM)

Saw this coming years ago.

Seems pointless though, Robocop hasn't dated a bit.

No doubt it'll be PG-13, maybe with a rapper as Murphy.

CORLEONE -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 10:01:43 AM)

Heard a rumour but didn't know it was confirmed. Could this actually be remake worth looking forward to? Any news on cast/director?

kumar -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 10:45:33 AM)

Brett Ratner, and he plans to make it a PG-13 so that kids can watch it for thrills, just like he did as a young teen. very pointless, and seeing the T4 poster made me shudder with

embarassment. That is really going to struggle to be any good, especially with the revelation that was revealed a couple weeks back.

Rgirvan44 -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 11:42:51 AM)

The Robocop remake seems...wrong. It has one of the most memorble casts in history. I think nearly everyone went on to other things...indeed most of the cast have been in 24.

While Murphy is imporant, who would they get to fill the shoes of Clarance or Dick Jones?

Its one of those perfect moments when script, cast and music all came together.

lukeyboy -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 11:45:37 AM)

Although it's not what the movie-going public are crying out for, I have no problem with Robocop being remade........what I do have a problem with is Brett Ratner being attatched!

There's nowt else anywhere on t'internet about this so Kumar, if your were joking.... please say so now before I go and commit Hari-Kari!!

LEEJGM -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 12:01:45 PM)

I'd rather see a sequel to the first one, much like like Superman Returns was a sort of sequel to Superman 2.  This would erase the very poor Robocop sequels from the canon but keep the first one.  I'd also want it to be directed by Verhoven again and keep the brutality and gore of the original.  Although now we live in a world where we have 'franchises' rather than films, so I wouldn't be surprised if we get a kiddie friendly Robocop trilogy with lots of videogames, toys and lunchboxes to go with it.

Actually, I'm sure I read somewhere once that Paul Verhoven wanted to remake this.  Anyone else read that?

They already tried to do this with the kid friendly tv show (no - you aren't missing anything), I remember as I had a Robocop toy whose back opened and you could insert gunpowder caps which if you pulled would go off and it looked like Robo was shooting.

Of course when I saw the movie it became quickly apparant how rubbish the tv show was.

CORLEONE -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 12:16:54 PM)

I hope you're kidding about Ratner. Verhoeven and Ratner are like chalk and cheese!

Robocop has to be 18. If they're doing a PG13 bollocks, then set it in a high school and call it RoboKid.

Scruffybobby -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 12:52:18 PM)

Oh. For. Fucks. Sake!

Kazuya -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 1:04:06 PM)

You've gotta be fucking kidding me.

broonie -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 1:27:11 PM)

Robocop remake?
Brett ratner?
PG-13?

F*** right off!!!

Workshed -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 1:29:14 PM)

What a shit idea. This, no doubt, is probably to do with Iron Man's box office takings.

Deviation -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 2:10:39 PM)

This is some sort of sick joke right?

Rgirvan44 -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 2:20:25 PM)

Its not like this series has been kicked in the balls over the course of the last 20 years.

Robocop 3.
TWO animated series
A live action TV show, with a kid and holographic ghost woman.
Prime Directives - barely made it through the first movie. Was funny seeing how the suit didn't fit the actor that well and how tiny he was to the other actors.

People complain about the Alien, Predator and Terminator franchises but it is Robocop that has truely been beaten into the ground.

porntrooper -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 2:35:39 PM)

I remember reading ages ago that there was potential for a remake of Robocop, but I don't ever remember hearing anything official to say it was off the ground.  These pictures are from a licensing Expo yes?  Is it possible the company with the rights is putting the idea of a new Robocop film out there without any actual commitments or deals being made?  You know, they put the word out, see if there is interest, show that they're happy to aim for a release date and see if anyone wants to back it?  Doesn't this kind of thing happen all the time in Cannes?

If it is true, if a deal is done and production on a new Robocop movie is going ahead, I just hope it's being done as a continuation and not as a remake.  Erase the shitty sequels and tv series, use Verhovens original as your set up and do a new sequel.  Don't remake!  Also, get some talent involved.

In my heart of hearts, I don't think it will happen.  I honestly think this could just be from the company owning the rights putting the feelers out.  If a new film is being developed, I'd guess that poster has fuck all to do with the final look and feel of the film.  It just looks like a CG drawing, not a real actor in costume.

Rgirvan44 -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 2:39:06 PM)

I wonder who in fact owns the rights to the character?

According to this article from March 08, it's MGM...... what do we think, is the poster from the licensing expo what MGM had in mind?  I honestly think this may just be out there to get backing, I can't beleive that shitty poster would be how they announce the reboot of franchise.  On the other hand, I can't beleive they would use such a shitty poster to try to drum up support or backing for a film project.  Surely if this were happening the trades would've printed something?

See, there's the problem isn't it.  You make an iconic character, and Hollywood can't resist medling with it and turning into a franchise.

Of any "franchise", only Aliens managed to take the idea further and develop themes.  Everyone else just churned out more of the same.  And don't get me started with the horrendous legacy of The Empire Strikes Back for turning entertaining fluff into "dark" and "epic"...

Diggler -> RE: Robocop Remake (11/6/2008 7:15:50 PM)

I liked the original I just felt Robocop moved a little too slow. If they do remake this then they should aim it at the 18+ market that's for sure. Mind you, I remember when I was a kid, it was torture when a new film came out and you couldn't in. It normally meant the oldest looking in the group kept going back to the ticket booth until he got rumbled.

You missed out "awesome" at the end of that.

Mr Grady -> RE: Robocop Remake (12/6/2008 1:27:33 AM)

They just want to collect from the merchandise.

grucl -> RE: Robocop Remake (12/6/2008 9:10:49 AM)

It will probably star Nicolas Cage since he seems to be in every single remake at the moment! [:@]

And they all turned out to be sh**... [X(]

Frank Castle -> RE: Robocop Remake (12/6/2008 9:21:44 AM)

Ghidorah -> RE: Robocop Remake (12/6/2008 9:26:21 AM)

Robocop is a perfect Sci fi film and doesn't require to be remade. There is nothing in film required to be fix or corrected. To me this is another PG-13 bullshit coming our way.

Heskin Radiophonic -> RE: Robocop Remake (12/6/2008 9:33:48 AM)

Okay, here's my controversial theory.  Star Wars was a huge hit, but it was entertaining fluff.  There was a lot of back story included which helped give it some depth - who was Luke's father? what were the Clone Wars? etc.  The studio hears cash tills ringing and asks for a sequel.  Lucas, eschewing the sequel convention of "more of the same, slap a no.2 on the title" is already primed and goes on to develop Empire - a superior sequel that developed the themes and turned the Star Wars series into an epic space opera.

Now, I like Star Wars and Empire, Jedi has it's moments... but it's the influence these had on Hollywood that has been the thing that pisses me off.

Pirates Of The Caribbean is the perfect example: part one was (on first viewing, at least) entertaining nonsense.  Then they went and made some godawful over long cod-epic sequels that went "darker".  Would they have done that without the precedent set by The Empire Stikes Back?  Or would they have gone the preferably way of developing stand-alone adventures of Jack Sparrow?  Would Back To The Future 2 have gone "darker" and "epic" and merely been a 2 hour lead-in for the fantastic BTTF3?

Oh, and when Lucas retitled Star Wars as Star Wars: A New Hope he paved the way for fucking awful elongated film titles with colons like Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins and Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl.

Are you sure you're in the right thread?

I was just bemoaning the concept of "franchise", and more people seem interested in my "Empire-Strikes-Back-is-to-blame-for-awful-Hollywood-cod-epic-sequels" than my other thoughts. [:D]
