G.O.B -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (10/6/2007 11:43:17 PM)

Well folks,i finally got around to watching a room for romeo brass and what a brilliant film it was.Paddy considine gives probably his best performance in this film, apart from maybe dead man's shoes.Very funny and touching, even the kids put in great performances which didn't rely on being cute.

Verdict:**** out of 5

wrenster -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (11/6/2007 9:11:53 AM)

What worked for me was the uncurrent of violence that seemed to be bubbling underneath all the time, giving this tension throughout. And like G.O.B. said, Paddy Considine's performance was extraordinary and totally unpredictable, never knowing what he was going to do next.

The scene in which he threatens Gavin was incredibly shocking, and kudos to Meadows for his handling of the direction, having the camera right in Considine's face, as if we are truly experiencing the terrifying threats being made.

It was also, surprisingly uplifting, with the two boys in the opening few minutes being the lightest part (the whole chip scene was hilarious).

I feel that the film has been badly overlooked, and while very unsettling to view, it just proved that when it comes to gritty, naturistic dramas we do them just as well as other countries, if not better, but we will never get the recognision as long as we keep coming up with fluffy rom-coms, costume dramas and East End gangster flicks. Meadows leads the way with his realistic view of Britain, and we should be celebrating his talents a lot more than we do.

ElephantBoy -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (11/6/2007 12:10:13 PM)

A Room for Romeo Brass
Shane Meadows early outing is more in tone and setting to his recent This is England.  Although it does have the more eathy and omminus feel of Dead man Shoes,  and the social poltic of Once unpon a Time in the Midlands.

Set in Nottingham we see Romeo (Andrew Shim)  and best friend Knocks (Ben Marshall)  total oppoistes,  but with a booming friendship until oddball Morell (Paddy Considne) wonders into town with designs on Ladine (Vicky Mclure) Romeo's sister.

Paddy Considne is once again excellent,  however the clever thing about the script is it's not really about his character, his prensces just steirs things up for the boys and their famlies.  It's all about Romeo and his evolivment,  the shift in tone half way though is well handled.  And the young perfromances are finely produched to give a very realistic feel.  Also Meadows shows what a great muscial Director he is useing a fine range of music to document different streads.  It's a asured piece of filmmaking.  8/10

I'd go for American psycho.

This is a film that stirred up a lot of commotion. And I like to see what people think about this film. How they see this film: comedy, thriller, satire, failed book adaptation or what have you.

Bob

ElephantBoy -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (12/6/2007 12:31:40 PM)

I was going to say that also,  although for me it would be good to review a film i'm seeing for the first time.  Or at least one which isn't so fresh in the memory.

G.O.B -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (13/6/2007 1:01:44 AM)

well, has everyone seen the apartment? if so,i'd go for american pysco as i haven't seen it yet.

ElephantBoy -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (13/6/2007 10:51:25 AM)

I've not seen the Apartment so i would be happy with that.   Just one thing it's not on in mid week is it?  As i'm going to Glastobury and don't want to miss it.

enemysprout -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (13/6/2007 1:41:38 PM)

Saw the Appartment a few weeks back, so that works for me.  Topsy Turvey might be a different choice.  I too am off to Glastonbury so next Fri to Sat isn't great as I'll be taping the highlights for that.

Did tape Romeo Bras so will add my comments and read all yours when I've seen it.

ElephantBoy -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (14/6/2007 1:13:06 PM)

I'm going on Wednesday or maybe Thursday.   Anymore reviews of a Room for Romeo Brass?

ElephantBoy -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (14/6/2007 1:15:03 PM)

The Apartments on Tuesday by the way.

Forkboy -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (14/6/2007 2:01:21 PM)

I like A Room for Romeo Brass in a lot of ways, but I have a real problem with the way the film starts out with Romeo estranged from his violent father, and Considine's character is this quite sympathetic local oddball, but by the end Considine is a total movie-psycho and we're celebrating that Romeo's dad has saved the day... with violence.  Do you think that's a deliberate ambiguity?

TheManWithNoShame -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (15/6/2007 12:01:12 PM)

Right, I must admit that I got mixed up this week. I for some reason had a notion that ARFRB was on Film Four, and that I could catch it on Film Four+1. As such I only caught the last hour, which is a shame as it looked decent enough. One problem I did have with it was the end, because if its supposed to be such a hard hitting drama, why do they take us out of it with a blooper reel? In my opinion that sort of ruined what had gone on before.

Now in regards to whats on this week, no-one has mentioned what seems to be an absolutely superb Jean-Pierre Melville season on Film Four this week. Bob Le Flambeur is a very fun and breezy film that anticipated the New Wave and Le Cercle Rouge is an absolutely terrific heist movie, both of which influenced just about every heist movie to come. In my opinion either would be perfect for this club. Then theres Les Doulos and Army in the Shadows, both of which I havent seen, but both of which I have heard fantastic things about, in particular the latter. Now I will be watching them anyway, but I think this would be a great way for film fans to get a view of a foreign master who they may not see otherwise if they watched any of these films, perhaps even watching them all if they wanted to, as its probably worth it.

ElephantBoy -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (15/6/2007 12:40:42 PM)

Personally i don't think it was suposed to be Romeo's father saving the day it was just a tense scene which he sorted out with Violence.  One of the good things about the film was how it dealed with the change in tone as Paddy's character became more sinister.  I supose the way it ended was questionable,  on first viewing i thought it was done really well on the second viewing i wasn't so sure.  It's not quite as perfect as some of his other films,  but still good.   On that subject i'm going to see this is England either tonight or this weekend.

ElephantBoy -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (15/6/2007 12:41:25 PM)

So we need help any other ideas for films next week.

I'm more than welcome to recommend the Melville season (as I have on my TV movie page). The problem is, which one? They are all terrific movies that should be watched whether they are club choices or not. Maybe this could be the first time we have a four movie club selection? (Only trouble there is if you miss one, as I'll probably will).

Put all 4 down and then discuss the ones youve seen. That, or maybe put down Army in the Shadows as it is regarded as his best in many circles.

Spider -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (15/6/2007 8:30:27 PM)

Melville season is a really good idea. My only problem with it would be that if people only catch one or two, and then different ones to everyone else, the discussion might be a little vague. On the other hand, it could make am interesting discussion about a director in general rather than just one film.

I haven't actually heard of Melville before, so am curious to see one of his films. I'm not sure how my video tapes will stretch to recording them all coupled with all the other great films on this week, not to mention the fact that I'm right in the middle of exams, but hey ho! To me it seems a good choice, we just need to decide if we settle on one film or just say see whichever you want.

Incidentally, I have been conspicuosly absent from the ARFRB dicussion. The reason for this I have to admit is because I completely forgot it was on. I looked into buying it but at the time I was a little strapped! I feel pretty bad as I'm one of the people who has been urging people to join this club, so for me to then fail to join in is a little rich, but I will make sure it doesn't happen again.

EDIT: Just noticed that The Man With No Shame has recommended "Army of Shadows" as the supposed best film. I would therefore suggest that we place that film as the high priority but also open discussion to the other three films as well. That way we have the focus of one film and the oppurtunity to dicuss his work as a whole. Also, there were a few suggestions for some of the terrestrial films, so if anyone has a burning desire to suggest one of them then don't feel like the decision is over!

Army Of Shadows is a terrific movie and yet one of Melville rare exits from crime thrillers (which he is more renowned for). I'm up for any of his work, although Army is possibly his most artistic and deeply felt movies.

I think it's too late to choose American Psycho, as its showing tomorrow night. Same as Atlantic City (interesting that this is being shown the same week as the Melville season...there are similarities)

If Army Of Shadows isn't chosen, I'd still plump for camp, camp Flash. (by the way, Death Race 2000 is being screened in two weeks time...now there's a perfect choice!)

TheManWithNoShame -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (16/6/2007 12:01:47 AM)

As much as enjoy the unadulterated campness of Flash Gordon, to choose that instead of any of the Melville films will be a crime. I think the idea of having Army in the Shadows as the main film and then the other 3 as part of the discussion is the best idea so far.

wrenster -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (16/6/2007 7:43:29 AM)

The only downside for choosing the movie are those who have difficulties either watching or actually having freeview.

I sometimes cannot watch freeview, as I am not the only one around to view it. My mother, who is ill and suffers from insomnia, often gets up and watches the shopping channels when she cannot sleep (or currently Big Brother Live) so I know that it becomes hard to view anything.

I've done a search for a DVD version, and it's available on Criterion Region 1, but as you all know, they cost an arm and a leg. The cheapest on ebay is £25 (including p&p) (which isn't as bad as some).

As for the Flash Gordon comment, come on TheManWithNoShame, stop being a movie snob. No one is arguing that a Melville season is a major TV event and it would be dumbfounded, but remember that there are some people out there that might not have heard of Melville, and fear French (or subtitled) movies, so Flash Gordon, out of everything else that is being shown, is an sort of alternative. But I'm hoping for Army In The Shadows (even if I do miss it, I've seen it already, so I can still join the discussion)

Don't forgot. Some people on here only think that the only movies that have ever been made are the LOTR trilogy and Star Wars! (I'm gonna get crucified for that comment)

Im not being a snob, I love Flash Gordon. My point is that most likely most of us have seen it as its a classic sci-fi. I just think this is the perfect opportunity for the Film Club to check out a director they may not have heard of. The fact that some people may not have heard of Melville is another big point in its favour, and I think considering that this is a 'film club', people will not have an aversion to watching a subtitled film.

G.O.B -> RE: Movie Club 2: The Revival! A Room for Romeo Brass, tonight on BBC2! (17/6/2007 12:40:31 AM)

I hadn't heard of melville till yesterday when there was all that enthusiasm for his work on wrestner's tv thread so i'm going to record all the films anyway.I'll add my support for army in the shadows as the main film and the other three films for a discussion on the director's work. Also, mwns,i have a couple of film buff friends, one in paticular who is not a fan of subs and almost made us turn of pan's labyrinth for this very reason(we didn't turn off the film because we were actually reviewing for a radio station we set up in our school,so thank god for that as i would have probably missed one of the best films of last year).

There is a R2 release from BFI but it uses the French title  L' Armee des ombres and you can get the Criterion for a hell of a lot less than £25,none of Criterion's 2 disc releases are that expensive, whoever's selling them for that on ebay is taking the piss.
