does this also double as a 'last comic you read?' thread - because i don't actually buy comics anymore...

im making my way through the entire back catalogue of every x-title there is. i've been reading for almost a year and a half now and im just past the mutant massacre :D

Highly recommended.  I got it on the recommendation of someone I know and it is very amusing.  Adult in language and tone but with cartoony art and very funny storylines.  Well worth a read.

it's improved a bit and i'm liking the two alternate futures, one where mutants rule and one where they're hunted down.

next is issue 50 to see how it all ends and they get back from the future :|

Supported by The Louvre this is a futurist slightly surreal tale of archaeologists who, after a new Ice Age, stumble upon the remains of The Louvre & along with their super intelligent dogs, try to piece together what all the art means & reveals about the past.

Charming pretty much sums up this slim graphic novel. In 19th century London Egyptian mummy Imhotep falls in love with the daughter of a professor & they get into a few scrapes. No one seems to be too surprised about mummies walking around, as Imhotep isn't the only one, but that's part of its charm. The artwork is beautiful & the dialogue amusing, its a real fun whimsical tale. With some expansion of the plot it would make a great film with maybe Terry Gilliam at the helm.

Ellis' most recent comic series.  Being Avatar it can be pretty extreme stuff (see Strange Killings whereby the lead character is a combat sorceror who communicates with the dead via necrophilia).  The premise is that one of the seven super heroes in the world who is the most trusted and directly involved in Washington politics one day decides the US President is a criminal and slaughters him and various others.  Another of the heroes is an alcoholic who was maimed during a car bombing which killed his superhero girlfriend resulting in the loss of his leg.  There are various threads running so far including flashbacks about how the "heroes" came to being by augamenting themselves via technology and the fact that the augaments may be detrimental to their long term mental health.  It is early days and in  the first two issues there have probably been about 100 deaths and maimings.  Potentially interesting although if the pace can be maintained and if Ellis will not wander off and lose interest is another story and it does sometimes come across as a bit preachy.

I like the look of that one! Might have to go a-hunting - is the artwork like that inside as well?

Anyone reading Firstborn (issue 1), I have a "first look" and saw it online. I'm waiting for it to be published in one before I buy it. Impressive artwork.

I read the first issue of First Born.   The artwork is very good but sadly as I haven't read Darkness or Witchblade previously I had no idea what was going on as it was obvious that you needed to know the backstory for both characters as such the story made no sense (SPOILER although I thought, from my meagre knowledge of the character, that Darkness died when he fathered a child).

I seem to be much more choosy about the comics I buy now, but if there's one thing I know, there are a few writers who I always find worthy of a blind buy. Mike Mignola and Brian K. Vaughan fall into this category for me.
I love all the Hellboy comics, the same with the BPRD ongoing run as well, and Ex Machina is just....well, class.

I just bought the death of superman triolgy from amazon and only the 1st and 3rd turned up. I also bought watchmen which I'm yet to read so I'll start that tonight as I can't read the 3rd instalment of superman until I've read the 2nd and I aint got it yet.

back in the day i read only the first and third parts as they were all my library had. i now have 2+3. I think the mid-part is the weakest of the three, mainly consisting of filler stories and nothing spectacular....but as you've got it coming anyway, wait for it ;) death is amazing though huh? one of the only s-man stories i can bear! seeing him get pummeled is awesome.

I just picked up the 4 part Andy Diggle / Jock Green Arrow Year One. Never read Green Arrow before, but bought it on the strength of the writer and artist behind the tremendous The Losers, and I'm enjoying it a lot. Well worth a look.

I also just picked up the first two DMZ collections, and of course the new 100 Bullets TBP. The former is shaping up nicely, and the latter is still, obviously, one of the best comics going, and indeed a milestone in hard boiled crime fiction in general. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

I think it's been pretty lean - I know what you mean about the art taking over, but then again I love Jock's work in The Losers - he just captures movement brilliantly. And while I bought all 4 episodes in one go, I noticed it came out fortnightly, so even if I'd have got one at a time I don't think I'd have viewed it as stretched out. But like I say, I never read Green Arrow before, and you may well have done which could put a different spin on it!

Have you read/are you reading Diggles tenure on Hellblazer? Because I think it's going great guns, and his writing seems to pair well with Manco's art. Plus it's nice to see cocky Con-job back... [:D]

I haven't read Green Arrow before, I picked up year One based entirely on the team behind it. I agree that Jock's art is great but I still feel the same about the writing. Haven't read Diggle's Hellblazers but both The Losers and his stuff in 2000 AD followed a very similar pattern (betrayed by best friend/partner, pop culture talk, the "serious one", the "funny one" type of characters, numerous betrayals and back stabbing) and it's only with Green Arrow that I've found it's become a little tedious. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of depth here but then, far as I can tell, Green Arrow has always been a difficult one for writers. I still think Diggle is a very good writer that still hasn't delivered his very best, which is a good thing, and will be chekcing out his Hellblazers once they are (presumably) collected into a TPB.

It is a good one.  It has lagged a bit in the middle, as most series of the longer running series tend to do, but now it appears to be approaching the home stretch is picking up again nicely.
