John Doe -> RE: STAR BORES (16/1/2006 2:12:27 PM)

Having never been a fan of modern TV fare such as Stargate, Buffy or Angel and their like. I went into this film on the basis of its Empire Review. But I found it extremely disappointing and very boring. Loose ends were never tied up and different characters appeared without explaination. I'm sure all the above critics are people who are big fans of Joss Whedon TV shows so if you are one of those people I'm sure you will enjoy it if not Stay well clear. Empire when reviewing take into account people who are not fans of this type of Sci Fi and be honest in your review 4 stars dont be silly.

Damn right!
This was one of the biggest disappointments last year. I went on the basis of the Empire review, never having seen Firefly...........What a pile of arse.
I can't believe that Empire named it as one of the film highlights of 2005!!!
What is Joss Whedon's fascination with fighting women; it seems he can't make a successful movie or TV series without one!!! Wonder Woman for his next project! A match made in heaven!
I'm sure I'll get lynched by a load of fanboys! I've already had the endless speeches by my mates who worship the ground on which Joss walks........

svgbdgr -> RE: Extra Extras Fruity Oaty Bar (27/2/2006 5:49:40 PM)

Really wanted to see this in the cinema, but missed it. I was hoping for something that would blow me away. Sorry fanboys, but I just don't get the obsession. It's fine, I don't dislike it, but it just isn't close to being as good as I was hoping. I just didn't get sucked in and taken on a ride.

Arianwen -> RE: Buy it so we can have a sequel (27/2/2006 6:46:02 PM)

I saw this without having watched even the first episode of the series (well, about ten minutes) and absolutely loved it. This is science fiction for the people who say they hate it - no lasers, silly costumes or aliens with knobbly foreheads (and I love sci-fi) - just a good story and some great action. It inspired me to actually sit down and watch the series, which IMO actually beats the late, great Farscape in style and tone (although only just).

chrisrus -> RE: Now this is what I call enteretainment (1/3/2006 9:58:43 PM)

Great film saw it in the cinema, watched it today on dvd and gonna watch it again at the weekend a few times

doubleshiny -> RE: Great film, rubbish marketing (2/3/2006 6:26:20 PM)

It is a great shame the future this franchise wasn't secured following the disappointing box office. I've said this before, but the marketing sucked. Look at the DVD cover. Who'd want to see THAT film?

I don't think it was ever going to be an easily marketable concept. I thought they might concentrate on one main character, such as River, and market around her, but they seemed to want to go with the group thing.

bamba -> RE: To the earth that is, (3/3/2006 4:36:37 PM)

I have never seen the Firefly series but I do rate Joss Whedon, and so thought I would watch Serenity.  I did not think it was a terrible film, I totally understand why people like it, but for me, I did not think it was enjoyable.  It all seemed like, if u wanna watch some really good sci-fi this would not be it, it felt like it was trying to be the best when it really was not.  I was also very annoyed by the women who played the engineer who falls in love with the doctor.  She was a very bad actress in my opinion and kept distracting me.  When they killed off the only character I was really interested in seeing more of - Wash, that was very annoying and jarring, as I did not think it was necessary!

miss_phoenix -> RE: Unless you're a fanboy, this is pretty weak stuff. (10/4/2006 6:15:57 PM)

you don't have to hgave seen firefly yo enjoy serenity but in the end it is simply your loss as both the film and series are worth more than a little respect.

just saw this on dvd and for a while went "what the hell is going on". i dunno if you have to be a fan of the tv series to know much about it but for a while i was getting confused.
What i really enjoyed was the ending. it really did wrap everything in the movie nicely and not many directors do that (see munich, and that was by steven speilberg!) it made you appreciate the movie more, which i already did for its brilliant comedy. nathan fillon was briliant and was the guy who played wash. i paticularly enjoyed the bit wen the villan brings out a sword and then fillon brings out a screwdriver ( no one will laugh when i tell them that)
all in all i liked this movie but there were some bits were you went im bored.

I would admit Serenity has a convoluted plot in which the details are suprising and difficult to follow. Nonetheless it's great fun.

pettsy -> RE: compliments to the director (10/4/2006 8:16:22 PM)

I've never seen Firefly although I like Joss Whedons writing, so I decided to watch this and rather enjoyed it.  I didn't find it hard to follow, and I really liked the use of language in the movie.  The one gripe I would have (which keeps it B-movie and out of Star Wars league) was the lack of money shots, but if you make the film with little of said money, you obviously won't have many.

Better than the Star Wars prequels though...

PedroSanchez -> RE: compliments to the director (11/4/2006 10:20:13 AM)

Great fun! Such a wonderful mix of action, drama, a lil emotion, and loads of humour. Seriously, this is one funny film! I don't rate it quite as highly as Revenge Of The Sith but it's still brilliant. Summer Glau and Nathan Fillion kick ass!

Zaphod121 -> RE: compliments to the director (11/4/2006 4:06:24 PM)

Joss Weadon is a god. fact

linkacid -> RE: compliments to the director (11/4/2006 4:20:33 PM)

Cant wait to see what wonder women will be like.

johndoe -> RE: compliments to the director (11/4/2006 5:08:58 PM)

When I originally went to see this at the cinema back in October, I had no idea what to expect. I'd never seen the TV series Firefly before, so this was completely new to me.

By the time I left the cinema, I had just seen one of the most enjoyable films of 2005. There is brilliant, often funny dialogue, and great acting, most notably from Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau as the eerie River Tam.

All of the original cast of Firefly are in this film, the most recognisable being Alan Tudyk, who has also starred in I, Robot and Dodgeball. Another addition to the cast of Serenity is England's own Chiwetel Ejiofor, playing a cold-blooded assassin.

Overall, I strongly recommend this to anyone looking for an adventure film that's not too corny, with plenty of thrills and laughs. I give it 8/10.

Twizzle -> RE: compliments to the director (12/4/2006 11:43:43 AM)

I love this film!

i fell asleep the first time i watched it..but then i woke up, left it a few days, and watched it again...and again...and again....

casino -> (5/7/2006 8:14:09 PM)

this is a brilliant film i am going to watch it again now!!!

UTB -> Are you kidding?! (12/7/2006 2:03:02 PM)

Having never seen Firefly or been a fan of Buffy, I should have heeded the warning that the director was also the creator of the Gellar filled shitfest.

I really cant remember the last time I have laughed so hard at such poor acting and putrid dialogue. I found no redeeming features at all. Even the special effects looked like they had been borrowed from third rate sci-fi TV series. Or was that intentional?

Having said that, my hopes were upped somewhat by learning of some evil people called "Reevers" or something. "ooh" I thought, at least it may contain some horrible looking people massacring others.

But no. The "evil" Reevers turned out to be badly dressed Xena cast-offs, which just made things worse.

I'm sure you probably need to be a fan of the series to enjoy this (I can see why it was cancelled), but for any film to stand alone it needs to have something for those not in the know.

This didnt. So, if you havent seen the series, avoid like MRSA.

UTB -> (16/7/2006 3:04:22 AM)

jncorbett -> Great stuff! (10/8/2006 4:31:30 PM)

Haven't seen Firefly, got this on a rental after reading nothing but good reviews. Now making a point of getting hold of Firefly, and then watching Serenity again! I'm told it's even better if you've already seen Firefly!

qualidad -> Serenity (30/9/2006 12:28:36 PM)

Not for me but not a bad film. Reasonable pacing and good imagination will keep you interested but repeatedly bad acting and dialogue take you out of the moment time and again. Ejiofor, comfortably the best thing in it shows the other cast members how its done. One for the fans.

moviemaniac2 -> (24/3/2007 6:37:05 PM)

A seriously entertaining piece of sci-fi. A sequel wouldn’t go amiss...

Funk_Knight -> Good... (13/4/2007 10:01:42 AM)

Very tight in places, pure Josh Weadon style, very predicatble in other places, still has a few suprises. Not ground breaking, but great entertainment, Good solid fun sci-fi flick.

Shepherdspy -> RE: (3/8/2007 5:28:41 PM)

Sales of the DVD have been good for Universal,with a 2 disc Special Edition Release due out August 21st-The Cast's Option for being picked up for a Sequel ends in,I think,November..Hopefully continued sales will influence the chance of a Sequel [:D]

Marty5 -> RE: RE: (8/8/2007 11:41:53 PM)

BRILLIANT! This film blew me away. The action was superb, there is never a dull moment throughout the film. Then great dialogue that george lucas only wish he could come up with is right on the money.
Nathan fillon is fantastic as malcolm reynolds and adam baldwin as jayne is really funny. The reavers are great baddies and chiwetel ejiofor is alos very good. Maybe cause im a fan of all joss whedon whether it be buffy, angel or firefly, that i loved this so much. In the same year as revenge of the sith was released, serenity put it to shame and in my opinion was a much better film. Now if only a sequel could be made.

darth silas -> RE: RE: (9/8/2007 1:32:41 AM)

CRAP.This film is just a cheap looking made for tv movie that has no place being on a big screen.The plot is dull and while the characters are good,they fight a losing battle against the script.Firefly ws a great show but this movie does not do it justice.To say that this cheap looking garbage is better than the awesome Revenge of the sith is a joke. 2/5

Lol, thats your opinion mate but i think that the little money joss whedon had he put it to better use than george lucas did with his prequels. And dont even talk about script, rotc had probably the worst script out of all the star wars,  it made me laugh alot.

And thats your opinion but i think that joss fucked this movie up big time as it just looked like a shit made for tv movie.The plot was just BORING,by the time the serenity crew were on that reaver ravaged planet,i was falling asleep.Firefly was a great show but this movie did not do it justice.If joss wants to bring back Mal and co.,he should do it on the small screen with a new season of the show.Not this rubbish
