Rgirvan44 -> George R.R. Martins Game of Thrones - HBO (17/1/2007 11:58:21 AM)

I cannot belive that HBO has the balls to make this into a show. For those of you that might not like fantasy books Martin is the finest writer I have come across in very very long time. These arent kids books but rather Lord of the Rings as directed by Paul Verhoeven. I just watched his "Flesh and Blood" and that has the same tone the Martin books do. Grubby medievil warfare and all its brutalites shot through the prism of a fantasy novel - heck the "fantasy" isn't even that strong - no elves or orcs in these books.

If this does go ahead I will be very very excited. However if they couldn't afford two seasons of Rome at 100 million each I have no idea how they are going to fund this.

It does seem to answer the question as to what HBO is going to do after Rome, The Sopranos, Deadwood and The Wire have all been cancelled or are in there final seasons. This, along with Preacher and the American Revolution drama make me very excited for upcoming television.

I'm not sure I'd go for it just yet given Martin's substantial problems in even coming close to deadlines. The last book in particularly was subject to major delays. But maybe this will push him to get his butt in gear?

Interesting the connection to Rome - the politics can be pretty complex in the books.

Good news! HBO have ordered a full season.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/44136

The series of books is a lot of fun, although some of the prose is a bit stinky. Martin also seems to be writing the series at a snails pace. Hope that the show just goes off and does its own thing if Martin hasn't completed the series.

elab49 -> RE: HBO making George R.R Martins A Song of Fire and Ice (2/3/2010 8:56:44 PM)

Not so good news - take a gander at the writer's track record - perhaps McCarthy will end up doing some major script doctoring to make sure we don't get Troy Mk 2.[&:]

Rgirvan44 -> RE: HBO making George R.R Martins A Song of Fire and Ice (2/3/2010 9:00:41 PM)

I actully had a look at the script for the pilot that they have already shot. It is pretty faithful - I suspect having these books to work from makes the process less subject to writers whims - and he did a good job adapting his own novel. I wouldn't be surprised if HBO bring in their pool of writers to script indvidual episodes.

And heck, I enjoy Troy!

They have resued some of the still standing Kingdom of Heaven sets if that gives an idea of the scale that they are going for.

elab49 -> RE: HBO making George R.R Martins A Song of Fire and Ice (3/3/2010 8:55:24 AM)

If you've been reading other stuff about it, do you know when we might get a look at the pilot? (Or if it's shooting/been shot?)[:)]

Rgirvan44 -> RE: HBO making George R.R Martins A Song of Fire and Ice (3/3/2010 9:37:17 AM)

The pilot was shot last year in Ireland and Monacco - its been edited together and was shown to HBO executives last week before they made a commitment to a full series.

The rumors are that filming will commence this year for a 2011 start. Each season will adapt one of the books - the first season will have ten episodes, including the pilot.

Hopefully we will start to see some cast pictures.

First pic that I have seen:

Hopefully this news will make him write a bit quicker - 1311 pages into Dance, though he's already started talking about moving chapters into Winds of Winter [&:]

Rgirvan44 -> RE: HBO making George R.R Martins A Song of Fire and Ice (3/3/2010 9:58:22 AM)

Thing is - I will be amazed if this series gets to a third season. Its pretty big budget, and quite an experiment for HBO - I can't think of any other fantasy series on TV given this much money. Martin should have a story bible which the show could use if needed, but failing that they should pull a Dexter and just do their own thing.

JagLover -> RE: George R.R. Martins Game of Thrones - HBO (5/3/2010 11:01:38 PM)

I have read the whole series and am waiting impatietly for the next instalment and think this will make a great TV series.

Budget may be an issue with some of the battle scenes in the first book.

JagLover -> RE: George R.R. Martins Game of Thrones - HBO (5/3/2010 11:03:18 PM)

They look to have the relative ages of Anya and Sansa out by those casting pics?. I thought Sansa was only a little older?

Rgirvan44 -> RE: George R.R. Martins Game of Thrones - HBO (5/3/2010 11:17:28 PM)

Will people stop feeding him junk food!!!*

*referrig to Martin in the pictures.

This is a comparison to other shows of how much each episode costs:
[image]http://7kingdoms.ru/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/diagramm1.png[/image]

An estimated $45 million for the first series of 10 episodes (reduced from 12).

BigKovacs -> RE: George R.R. Martins Game of Thrones - HBO (10/3/2010 10:36:26 AM)

I have ridiculously high hopes for this series, simply becouse I love the books so much. I hope to god this works out well.

elab49 -> RE: George R.R. Martins Game of Thrones - HBO (10/3/2010 11:48:20 AM)

Why is Robin Hood thrown in randomly with a bunch of HBO series in that chart?

Rgirvan44 -> RE: George R.R. Martins Game of Thrones - HBO (10/3/2010 12:15:47 PM)

Think it is just to compare the show with other fantasy shows on at the moment. To be honest the series has got some huge tax breaks from the Irish Goverment so that money will go much further. Rome cost a fortune as they filmed it in Italy, at a pretty expensive studio, and John Adams had a lot of location shoot abroad, not to mention expensive tv production in the United States itself.

Game of Thrones has also been able to cut some corners but re-using some movie sets, including the ones for Kingdom of Heaven, cutting costs even further. When it is all said and done, the show should have a similar scale to Rome.

Jeffrey -> RE: George R.R. Martins Game of Thrones - HBO (20/3/2010 4:08:43 PM)

Jennifer Ehle is out of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Replacing her is Northern Irish actress Michelle Fairley who played Hermione Granger’s mother in the Harry Potter films.

The role of Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s "The Game of Thrones" has been recast. Tamzin Merchant (Catherine Howard in The Tudors), who left the project last month, has been replaced by actress Emilia Clarke.

Think Rome and the Tudors, meets Lord of the Rings. But 18 rated, and no orcs, or monsters and very little magic. The books are pretty damn good - you should give the first one a try.

And that's Tudors as in the convoluted family politics and political shenanigans generally - not the dodgyiness of the TV show.[:)]

Can't begin to tell you how gutted I am that I shaved my head, after reading this article:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/10339677.stm

With the tan I have at the moment I could easily pass for Hispanic.  No good ever comes of doing something nice for other people. Boo and hiss.

Could answer the question - who would really give their right arm to be in the show...
