Sinfonic -> Heck yes (5/9/2006 8:30:33 PM)

Forget about your pulp fictions and the like, this is the coolest film ever made. so there.

Alvy Singer -> Thank you Empire (6/2/2012 3:57:50 PM)

Thanks for a great review of my fave film of all time, and thanks Empire for keeping Casablanca alive with the extensive retrospective this month.
Casablance is the only perfect film ever made, it is flawless. The best cast, the best script (easily), the best photography, I could go on...

party_monster -> Completely agree (8/2/2012 4:51:58 PM)

I love this film so much. "I'm a drunkard, it makes me a citizen of the world." Beautiful, and makes me weep happy tears every time from about 2 minutes before Ilsa walks into the bar till pretty much the end. Best film ever.

My dear empire, I understand that some films are untouchable for reviews. Like Gone with the wind, Citizen Kane etc but some films would have won a Golden raspberry at their time yet now we Praise them for some reason. Casablanca is one of those movies. At the time of its release everyone talked about how there were no chemistry between the leads, the weak subplot and the Deus ex machine solutions and of course the un Hollywood ending. Yet empire gives a review like any other indifferent and unsatisfying. The movie is a 4/5 tops just because it’s a classic. I own the special edition released few years ago and I love the film but exactly because I love it I know this movie and I am honest enough to say that it is not a masterpiece!

twinpeaks4eva -> Beautiful Friendship (20/3/2012 3:11:06 PM)

Timeless is the perfect word to describe Curtiz's classic war-time romance, perhaps one of the most lovable films ever made; anyone who doesn't fall in love with Casablanca is severely out of touch with the cinematic realm. Stuffed with forever quotable lines ('Here's lookin' at you...', 'I'll never have the strength to leave you again...') and merging pretentious external war tensions, glorious Hollywood melodrama and glamour in the same vein as Gone With the Wind, although not as grand or visually iconic, Casablanca is in retrospect the more romantic picture, for the lovers are actually redeemable and selfless, meant for each other but ultimately separated by circumstance. Casablanca is simply pure film magic, both Bogart and Bergman are at their best along with Veidt, Lorre and Rains in the supporting bank of comedic value and suspense. This is true Americana of the highest order, and it gets better with every viewing, watch it each year for maximum impact. Sensational.
