Who Are The New Mutants In X-Men: Days Of Future Past?
A quick guide to Bishop, Sunspot, Warpath and Blink

submit to reddit

In the X-Men: Days Of Future Past trailer, which we’ve broken down here, you will spot lots of familiar mutant faces from both Bryan Singer’s original X-Men series and Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class. But in addition to all these already-beloved mutants there are four new additions to the franchise. So who are these guys, and what can they do? Here’s a quick primer.

Bishop

X-Men: Days Of Future Past - Bishop

Played by: Omar Sy

In the comics, Lucas Bishop comes from an alternate future, a time where Sentinels rule the world and Australia’s been devastated by a nuclear attack. Bishop’s family escaped Oz just in time, and he grew up in a concentration camp before joining Xavier’s Security Enforcers, where he tracked down mutant criminals. It was in pursuit of one of these, a guy named Fitzroy, that he originally came back in time to the modern-day, main X-timeline and met the X-Men, heroes his grandmother had told him about. His granny had cool role models.

Bishop’s mutation allows him to absorb virtually any form of energy, store it for use and release it as blasts of “biokinetic” energy. Like Jack Reacher, he always knows exactly what time it is, and also like Reacher he’s physically big and imposing. Notable features include a tattooed 'M' for 'Mutant' above his right eye, which you can see has been carried over here, and he has also had a massive prosthetic arm on occasion. You don’t want to mess, in other words.

It makes sense that, in the film, they ditch the alternate timeline and time-travel stuff and just introduce Bishop in a post-apocalyptic future very similar to the one where he grew up. While Bishop has been an X-Men antagonist at times, we’re guessing he’s on the side of the angels here, and also that – as one of the more popular characters of the ‘90s era – he will get to unwrap some whoop-ass and spread it liberally around any Sentinels that threaten.

1 The Chinese Market
@Helenohara The above article speculates Blink getting additional screen time in an International cut for increased success in the Chinese market....... but can Days Of Future Past be shown in China????? I'm sure I read, not too long ago, an article stating that the Chinese government have banned all films involving time travel because they do not want to encourage their people to re-write their own history. I think they'd be hard pressed to convince the Chinese censors that Logan's journey is not time travel thus causing the film to be banned. More

@Helen OHara Supposedly Ink is also going to appear, which timeline is anyones guess, seems one of the strangest mutants to be introduced but hey the more the merrier in my opinion More

Warpath can definitely fly - it's in X-Force and I think Messiah Complex as well. Some writers just dislike using the power because it seems a bit much (with good reason) so it's been left to one side. I agree he probably won't fly onscreen. And Sunspot's NEAR invulnerable, as I said. You just forget he is because people keep reminding him (like, ALL the time) that he can be hurt. We're looking forward to seeing Quicksilver too. Wonder if he'll be the final newcomer? More

Yeah, I don't recall Warpath ever flying, I guess it was a limited run, and I'm guessing he won't fly in the film. I'm actually looking forward to seeing these Lesser known X-men get some screen time even if it is limited, what the guess that some of them may appear in the upcoming X-Force film. Fingers crossed this isn't the last we've seen of Bishop he's one of the greats. Also where was QuickSilver in the trailer...Overall Cannot wait for this, only thing that I'm unsure about is the apparent lack of 1970's X-men I mean are they going to explain where Banshee, Havok, Emma Frost and co. have gone or just completely forget them ... During X-Force 102-115 Warpath could fly but he has not used that power in a while. As for Sunspot he is almost invulnerable, both he and several other people commented on this when he was injured during a fight with a bad guy. More
