The Wonderful World Of Tim Burton Tim Burton's style is instantly recognisable, as demonstrated in this week's Alice in Wonderland pics. We look back over his history to see how it developed, in the man's own words.
Mars Attacks! (1996)
Taking inspiration from Ed Wood, Burton moved on to make farcical space movie Mars Attacks! Based on a set of '60s trading cards, the original idea was to use the aesthetic of the period, with stop-motion techniques creating the Martian creatures invading Earth. Burton "wanted to make [the special effects] look cheap and purposely fake-looking as possible". However, Henry Selick, his collaborator on The Nightmare Before Christmas, was midway through his version of James And The Giant Peach, and although Burton assembled an alternative team of animators to attempt it anyway, he ended up using ILM to CG-ify the aliens.
