The perfect romantic gesture is not necessarily about getting the girl. Sure, John Cusack holding the boombox aloft in Say Anything might be romantic as hell, but it's essentially a selfish act. Ditto Richard Gere conquering his fear of heights to climb the fire escape to Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman; Dustin Hoffman invading Katharine Ross' wedding in The Graduate; or Beast giving Belle a library in Beauty And The Beast.
The true romantic gesture is about doing something just for the person who has stolen your heart. You might not end up intermingling your unmentionables, they might not even know you did it or, in the most heart-rending examples, you might actually end up sending them into the arms of someone else.
But you'll know that you've done something to make that person's life better, even if makes your own a snivelling hell. So, yes, a few of the moments in this list are a touch gloomy in their romanticism, but in a good way. And a few don't even concern loved-up couples, because romance is about two people connecting, even if that doesn't involve wandering off into the sunset together.
And I've ruled out anything that involves a power ballad, on the grounds that if you need Jennifer Warnes or Roxette warbling about how big your love is, then you're just not trying hard enough.
