Friday Night Lights (2004)
In impoverished Odessa, Texas, priorities are God, America and the high-school football team, in that order. Peter Berg's acute adaptation of H. G. Bissinger's factual novel follows coach Billy Bob Thornton's attempt to guide his Panthers to the 1988 State Championship, with the town's hopes loaded onto his young charges' shoulders. The final, one of the most bone-crunching, heart-stopping games ever filmed, delivers a real-life twist few fictional movies can top, all tinged with the bittersweet knowledge that, for most of these kids, this is as good as it would get.
