Hoosiers (Aka Best Shot) (1986)
As in Friday Night Lights, we're in a one-horse town where a new, tough-talking coach (Gene Hackman) is greeted with suspicion as he whips a beloved school team into David-vs.-Goliath, state championship-winning shape. Here it's basketball, and though Hoosiers features every underdog cliché going, dammit if the big-game showdown (scores tied at 40-40, clock running down...) doesn't sweep you up in its wake. When the team disputes Hackman's incorrectly improvised tactics, and star player Jimmy quietly vows of the key shot, "I'll make it," it's nothing but net all the way.
