Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)
Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, had a thing for fancy cars — and generally 007 got to test-drive them. But Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, star of Fleming's children's novel that was turned into a 1968 film, could float on water and fly, so would have been incongruous even in Bond's world. But it makes the list primarily because of the song — you don't get that with Vanishing Point's Dodge Challenger. Altogether now: "Oh, you pretty Chitty Bang Bang, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang..."

I loved the list. I think if you had a # 11 you should have the purple convertible from True Romance. The car was a big part of the adventure-from freezing detroit to sunny california. When Clarence and Alabama were happy or beat to s!*t the car took them there. ... Read More

RE: Erm...
See Empire? Tons of other cars have just been mentioned in the replies above, cars that play an important part in their respective films. So why have you included the Corvette from Con Air and the Ferrari of Bueller's day off? I think you should just do a reader's poll on this subject to see what the general consensus is on the matter including all the aforementioned cars and the ones of your top ten. We'll then see how great the corvette and the ferrari turn out to be.     ... Read More

I can understand Christine, simply because its the main *cough* driving force of the film. But in the same respect, where the hell is Herbie? As probably already mentioned, having no DB5 is quite frankly unforgivable. And what about The BluesMobile (with its cop tyres, cop engine.....) ??????? ... Read More

Mini Cooper
I have to mention the Mini Cooper/s from either The Bourne Identity or The (Original) Italian Job, just because an iconic British motor gets one over on a French and Italian car/s in their own back yard. Chris Hewitt
explains his choices...

Cars have been an integral part of the movies since the very beginning, but cinema has arguably played a huge part in the romanticising of them, with cameras lingering over sleek, smooth curves, and sound systems accentuating the raw, powerful purr of tuned-up engines. Would Minis, for example, be so idolised now if not for The Italian Job?

So, a great movie car does more than reach 88mph in ten seconds. A great movie car does more than look so good that it would send the Top Gear team delirious. Of course, ideally, it should have that 'want now' quality, but that's not the be-all-and-end-all. For the most part, a great movie car has to be important to the plot — and that doesn't always mean starring in a tyre-screeching car chase — and it has to reflect the personality of the main character. Hell, sometimes it can be the main character.

This is a subjective list, and I haven't been entirely strict in applying my own criteria. I did, however, want a blend of cars that already existed (that, with a copy of Auto Trader and plenty of cash, you could realistically own) and cars that had been created specially for the films in which they appeared. I was also keen to reject too many obvious icons — Bullitt's Mustang or Herbie — and any cars that started life on the small screen, which means no place for Starsky & Hutch's Ford Torino or The Dukes Of Hazzard's General Lee. Sorry, guys, but dem's de breaks. Or, in this case, brakes.

You Think?
