10 Gary Oldman (Hannibal) 2001
Some actors opt to fight their way out from behind an extensive make-up job, while others allow it to consume them. Gary Oldman’s Mason Verger, the appallingly mangled, killer-pig-breeding sole surviving victim of Hannibal Lecter, was so immersive that the studio were able to turn the actor’s request for no screen credit to their advantage, attempting to spin some mystery and buzz out of who was actually under the latex. An oblique tribute to Karloff’s “?” credit in Frankenstein?
