As wardrobes go, this one’s minimal. Cary Grant wears the same immaculately cut grey suit for almost the entire running time. So why does it win a place here? Well, first of all because it’s a flawless encapsulation of Grant’s trademark perfect style (Savile Row tailoring, gorgeous fabric, pocket square), and secondly because there’s an argument that North By Northwest is a movie about what happens to the suit, not Grant — and it’s the suit that holds up better under pressure.
