Richard Fi About me | | 08:12, 13 June 2008 | Report This Post | | | | | No Clueless!!! | And I realise that I'm coming from a view point of a certain age but Cher's wardrobe (both the clothes in it and the physical cupboard itself) and her funky, cute and individual style gave a generation of girls, yes even those of us who choose to spend our time writing on the comment board on a movie web page, the belief that you could create your own look, not having to slavishly stick to fashion, and look great doing it. So what if there are a few misses here and there after all, doesn't that ... Read More

Helen O’Hara explains her choices...
Sound girlie? Stick with us. There’s no overestimating the importance of costumes in film. Movie stars already look better than normal people — but the right wardrobe can transform them from actor to icon. Clothing may not make the man, but it definitely makes the character, and the ten that I’ve selected here are the consistently best-dressed in cinema history.
Howard Hawks said that a great film had to have three good scenes and no bad ones. Similarly, here the choices have to be without exception good: his workaday clothes cancel out Tony Manero’s white suit in Saturday Night Fever, and James Bond, whose suave way with a tuxedo might make him seem like a shoo-in, ultimately trips over with those Roger Moore safari suits.
Concerning restrictions, the toughest call was on the costume dramas that often win the Oscars in this category. Having decided that I’d not give marks for authenticity, do they qualify as great wardrobes? Well, sometimes, as the list shows, but Cleopatra’s anachronisms are entirely acceptable in this context.
Finally, while not necessary for inclusion on the list, bonus points have been awarded to the starting of trends in your wardrobe. This may give the ‘name’ designers (Armani or Givenchy, say, both represented here) an unfair advantage, but them’s the breaks in the cut-throat world of high fashion...
