This Summer's Blockbusters, Rated By Spielberg-iness
Which of this year's big films is most Spielberg-y?

A lot of the summer blockbusters this year feel a bit like they were directed by Steven Spielberg - even though his big feelgood movie, War Horse The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn, doesn't come out until November. But he has dabbled in several of the films that have brightened our multiplexes this summer, and even some of those with no 'Berg involvement sometimes seem to belong alongside his canon. So here's our take on this year's big films, rated by Spielberginess...

Underdog / Everyman hero Teenage / immature hero Aliens visit Earth Government cover-up Coming of age Broken families coming back together Nazis or dinosaurs Spielberg involved Tribute to cinema history Astonishing set pieces Bit with a dog SCORE
Thor No Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes - except for Loki, obvs. No - Aryan, yes; Nazi, no No No Yes Yes 7
Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides No Maybe - it depends on your view of Cap'n Jack Maybe - it depends on your view of Cap'n Jack Yes - only it's the Spanish government this time No No No No No - not unless you count previous films Yes No - but this is the first Pirates film without a bit with a dog. 3
Kung Fu Panda 2 Yes - "underpanda", technically, but close enough Yes No - or, depending on your view of talking animals, yes. No Yes - very much so: this guy even goes for full-on inner peace Sort-of here. But there's more due in the third instalment. Sort of: there's a Nazi-adjacent peacock Only in that he was involved in the creation of DreamWorks Animation Yes - but mostly it's kung-fu films rather than classic Hollywood Yes Yes. Also a tiger, a monkey, a rhino, a snake... 7
X-Men: First Class Yes - although "everymutant" might be more accurate Yes No Yes Yes, in terms of powers at least. No Yes No Yes - at least to other films in the franchise Yes No 7
Green Lantern Yes Yes Yes No - but then they don't really come into it Yes No - but he does overcome his father complex No No Not really Yes No 5
Transformers: Dark Of The Moon Yes - although if Sam Witwicky stays this annoying, we're stripping him of his everyman privileges. You betcha Yes Yes - although, we're guessing, with very little success God we hope so. No No Yes! He was an executive producer! No Yes Yes 8
The Tree Of Life Yes, assuming "hero" is the word Yes Maybe? No Yes? Yes? Yes! Dinosaurs, anyway. No No? Yes? Yes 7.5
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part II Yes -for all his fame the "Boy Who Lived" is just a guy. Yes No Well, the bad guy controls the government, so yes, sort of. Yes, decidedly. Yes, but they mostly only reunite metaphysically speaking. Yes, given that Voldemort's obsession with "pure blood" status makes him Nazi-adjacent. No, although he did once flirt with directing the very first Potter film. No, except for the rest of the franchise. Yes. Do dragons count? 7
Cars 2 Yes, by which we mean Tow Mater. Admittedly, Everymen everywhere might object. Yes. No - or, depending on your view of talking cars, yes. No, although spies are involved. No Yes, only it's a "family" more in the "group of friends" sense. No No Yes No No. There are no dogs here, just Rovers. 4
Captain America: The First Avenger Definitely Yes Yes, in that the cube MacGuffin relates to Thor and his alien cronies. Yes Yes - in a more physically literal sense than usual. No Yes! No Yes - including a few nods to Indy. Yes No 8
Super 8 Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes No Yes - he produces Yes, definitely: think E.T. and Close Encounters for instance. Yes Yes 10
Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes Yes - although the real hero is a chimp rather than a man. Yes No, just genetically-altered apes. Probably, although we're not sure if they'll be able to. Yes, in a more intellectually literal sense than usual. Actually, this one's more about families breaking up. But the chimps unite so... yes? You could argue that humans are both Nazis and dinosaurs here. No Yes, and huge amounts thereof, although mostly to other Apes movies. Yes Yes 7
Cowboys & Aliens No - neither Daniel Craig nor Harrison Ford were ever underdogs. No Yes We assume so, since we hadn't heard about aliens in the Old West before. Yes - but we won't say who or how for fear of spoilers. Yes - again, we're not saying who or how. No Yes - he executive produces. Yes, there are all sorts of nods to other Westerns and sci-fi movies. Yes Yes 8
Conan The Barbarian Sort of: the odds are against him, but he's Conan. Sort of: he's a barbarian. No The government just tries to slaughter everyone so... yes? Yes - in that he goes from one man alone to (probably) godlike warrior. No. Family values are not very Conan. This depends on your definition of both Nazis and dinosaurs. No Yes Probably Don't know yet 4
Fright Night Yes Yes No Probably (offscreen) Yes No No No Mostly to the original Fright Night. That said, the housing development looks very E.T.-esque. Yes Yes 6
Underdog / Everyman hero Teenage / Immature Hero Aliens visit Earth Government cover-up Coming of age Broken families Nazis or dinosaurs Spielberg involved Tribute to cinema history Astonishing set pieces Bit with a dog SCORE
