His Knowing Sense Of Humour
Spielberg's dog Elmer with Roy Schnieder in Jaws.
From the opening of 1941 that replays Jaws' opening shark attack but with a Japanese submarine to the sly moment in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade where Indy identifies a painting of the Ark of the covenant ("Are you sure?" "Pretty sure"), Spielberg has never been above a sly referencing to his cinematic heritage. This is not self aggrandising homage, just a playful nod for fans and friends. Also keep them peeled for Spielberg's dog Elmer in various guises (Jaws, Close Encounters, 1941), Molen's Kitchen in Hook (named after producer Gerald R. Molen) and The Lost World screenwriter David Koepp running from a t-rex in San Diego.
