His Genius At Directing Children

Spielberg with Haley Joel Osment on the set of A.I.
Spielberg is, without doubt the greatest director of children in the history of movies. Giftted at finding unknowns (Cary Guffey in Close Encounters, Christian Bale in Empire Of The Sun) or working with established child actors (Haley Joel Osment in A.I., Dakota Fanning in War Of The Worlds), Spielbetg's unique skill is to harness children's honesty and unpredictability without a hint of the affected or precocious. Inspired by Francois Truffaut who told him "You must make a movie with keeds!", his crowning glory remains E.T. drawing a troika of performances from Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore that miraculously make the relationship between three children and an anamatronic puppet not only believable but heartbreaking.
