These Five Notes
For Close Encounters memorable first meeting between Earth and E.T.'s, John Williams had originally wanted to use a seven note musical message.Yet, Spielberg wanted to the refrain to be less a melody and more of a greeting and insisted on just five notes. Although the pair went through 300 odd permutations of five notes, the resulting phrase seems to be the only possible choice.
