That He Directed Joan Crawford Aged 21

Making his directorial debut aged 21 on an episode of Rod Serling's Night Gallery, Spielberg found himself in the unenviable position of directing Hollywood legend Joan Crawford. With Crawford playing a blind woman who buys back her sight only to experience vision during a nighttime power cut, Spielberg's first meeting with the actress saw him walk into her apartment to be confronted with her stumbling around the room in a blindfold trying to replicate blindness. The show proved a baptism by fire for the neophyte director - Crawford could only work with cue cards, the crew distrusted his youth - but it proved that, even aged 21, he had the nous, confidence and charm to get the best from the biggest stars.
