That He Gave Birth To Columbo

Little known fact. Steven Spielberg directed the first regular episode of US TV institution. Written by Steven Bochco (later creator of Hill Street Blues and Murder One), 'Murder By The Book' sees the shabby detective investigate the murder of a mystery novelist by his writing partner using a murder method created by the dead man for their next collaboration. Once again, Spielberg clashed with his crew, imploring cinematographer Russell Metty to find new and interesting camera angles. The result is a great piece of crime TV. Columbo repaid the tribute in an episode entitled Murder, Smoke And Shadows in which the villain is a movie brat murderer clearly based on Spielberg.
