His Hand In The Back To The Future Trilogy

Although the origins of Back To The Future lay in the minds of Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, Spielberg's input into the hugely successful time-travelling trilogy was, as always, right on the money. As production began in the autumn of 1984, with the young Eric Stoltz cast as the skateboarding, college-kid Marty McFly, things did not look good. "It was a miscalculation on my part" admitted Zemeckis, "Eric is a fabulous actor, but it wasn't the right type of performance for the type of humour I was going for in the film". Enter one S. Spielberg, whose insistence that the lead role be given to the writer's original choice - Michael J.Fox - was instrumental in Marty becoming the truly likeable, fretboard-licking hero we all know and love.
