Some filmmakers use their clout to greenlight vanity projects or swan around in Humvees. Spielberg uses his power to help give young filmmakers a start. From helping a young Robert Zemeckis get his first feature I Wanna Hold Your Hand off the ground at Warners, Spielberg has acted as godfather to a raft of filmmakers; Joe Dante, Chris Columbus, Lawrence Of Kasdan, Gore Verbinski, Matthew Robbins, John Patrick Shanley, Brad Silberling, Phil Joanau, Sam Mendes and Gil Kenan have all had a leg up from a Spielberg connection. Not only that, Spielberg has also bankrolled established directors - from the Akira Kurosawa to Errol Morris - in getting difficult productions off the ground.
