The Genius Of Duel

In 1971, Steven Spielberg's Duel transformed the staid genre of the TV Movie Of The Week. Taking a simple idea - an ordinary Joe (Dennis Weaver) is hunted on the highway by a killer truck - Spielberg took a pared down premise and transformed it into TV gold - so good that it received a theatrical release in the UK. This graph shows how Spielberg orchestrared a simple road trip into riveting, white-knuckle storytelling...

1 Truck waves car onto oncoming traffic. |

2 Truck rams car off road. |

3 Confronting trucker. |

4 Truck pushes car onto train track. |

5 Truck rams phonebox. |

6 Mann's car overheats. |

7 Truck goes off the cliff. |
