His Relationship With Stanley Kubrick
Spielberg struck a friendship with Stanley Kubrick when the reclusive auteur was making The Shining at Elstree (Spielberg was scouting for sound stage space for Raiders around the same time). What began was one of moviedom's infamous friendship. Although they only met some 12 times in 18 years - much of the friendship was covered by fax - Spielberg and Kubrick talked the minutiae of movies until the cows rattled the keys in the door and switched on the kettle. The ultimate fruits of the friendship was A.I. Artificial Intelligence, a project that Kubrick gifted to Spielberg in 1994. Sensing Kubrick's passion for the project, Spielberg passed but, following the director's sad passing in 1999, Spielberg took on the A.I. baton and turned in a movie that is genuinely a mixture of the two filmmakers sensibilities - in protecting and cherishing Kubrick's vision but combining it with his own, he created one of the most fascinating flicks of his 25 year career.
