That He Found Christian Bale

Christian Bale in Empire Of The Sun.
It took Spielberg nine months to find Empire Of The Sun's Jim Graham. From a long line of 4,000 kids, the movie's lead role was eventually handed to a relatively unknown thirteen year-old named Christian Bale. Bale's superbly confident performance as the resilient school boy held in a WWII Japanese Prison Camp, provides Empire with a stirring, emotional core which the audience is forced to follow through the death and destruction that permeates Jim's journey. It was an inspired piece of casting from the director and Bale's recent successes as a leading actor are testament to Spielberg's instinctive ability to pick the best man for the job.
