7 Sci-Fi Books To Read Before You See Avatar
The novels to bone up on before you see Cameron's latest

Most science fiction films never really leave Earth: they just tinker around with robots or crazed computers of post-apocalyptic landscapes. Well, not James Cameron's Avatar, because this time there's an actual alien planet and actual aliens on it. So if you don't know your Arrakis from your Admiral Ackbar, read on to get a grounding in some of what you're going to see...

7 Sci-Fi Books To Read Before You See Avatar | Dune 7 Sci-Fi Books To Read Before You See Avatar
Dune
Frank Herbert (1965)

The granddaddy of science-fiction epics, Frank Herbert's masterpiece takes place on a world where a substance, spice melange, essential to interstellar travel is produced - something a little similar in price at least to the unobtanium that Avatar's human explorers are determined to mine. A new ruling family, the Atreides, are sent to rule the planet and ensure that the spice flows (because the Spice must flow), but when son Paul Atreides finds himself in the wilderness beyond the human cities, he realises that Dune's secrets go far beyond anything humanity had guessed. This one has the same epic sweep that Cameron's aiming for, and also aims to create a complex and convincing world.

Read it because: It's essential to any science-fiction education.

Interstellar Patrol by Christopher Anvil (parts 1 & 2) Years after first reading it, i'm still amused, delighted and awed by the book when i sit down to read. A great read for those who appreciate the victors using by wit and intelligence instead of the superior military force. Pure Genius. Read More

Anne McCaffery's Dragon's of pern would be good to read to for the impression's. But the Ship Who Sang is a beautiful read. My favorite is Lois McMaster Bujold, and yes once you start reading Miles you cannot stop, in fact must reread again, for a little guy he is one hell of a character and he gets into all sorts of trouble. And yes Richard Morgan. Read More

I've only read one of those so will check out the rest. Also worth mentioning is Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. It deals a lot with the transfer of minds into other bodies. Geat detective noir as well. Good skills Empire Read More

13 Old Mans War?
Posted on Saturday October 31, 2009, 09:24 by Dave25
What about Old Man's War by John Scalzi? The fact that Cameron has ripped off the cloned body and mind transfer part of this book I should say so, its ok though as the clones in the book had green skin not blue so Cameron can't be sued :-/ Read More

Starship Troopers? I read that Cameron made the cast of Aliens read the book. And if there are space marines in Avatar chances are they'll be something like the Mobile Infantry. BTW- Dune is one of the best books I've ever read. Read More

'A Princes Of Mars' springs to mind, first of the '( John Carter) Of Mars books': Human dude transported to alien world, gives alien dudes the motivation to rebel. Most creatures are direct analogues of earth creatures but a different colour and extra legs. Written by the dude that wrote Tarzan. For maximum enjoyment of Avatar DON'T read this book, or the seven above...and don't watch Aliens, dances with wolves, and definitely definitely don't watch Delgo. Read More
