"it's no surprise that this is the only film he returned to sequelise," Empire on Paul Newman in Hustler.
Now I'm not one to normally moan about things like this but I find it appalling that when remembering a great mans career such a silly error can be made. Any Newman fan knows that he "sequelised" the character of Lew Harper in the films Harper and later The Drowning Pool. The fact that Drowning Pool was made over 10years before The Colour Of Money only makes this worse... Read More

Perhaps it's indicative of the period when I grew up and mainly being familiar with his roles from TV showings, but films such as Harper, its sequel The Drowning Pool, Fort Apache: The Bronx, Judge Roy Bean and The Macintosh Man spring to mind as ones I enjoyed and have fond memories of. Hombre is his movie that I loved the most from his youthful period and from his later years, I go with Twilight. All that witty sparring with Gene Hackman... ... Read More

Cool Hand Luke, The Sting and Butch Cassidy were perfect vehicles for Newman's smouldering charisma and endless class, yet it is Road To Perdition that perfectly captures the boundless talent that he came to rely upon in his later years.
After the looks had faded and the voice grown ragged, Newman was still able to dominate the screen, his blue eyes shining like gimlets, his raw, God-given gift for acting burning like hot coals. Mendes's film was a beautiful, haunting vision, memorable for i... Read More

Another one to check out: Sometimes A Great Notion. Directed by Newman as well, with Henry Fonda and Lee Remick. It's an underrated adaptation of the book by Ken Kesey. Not on DVD and hard to find. ... Read More

Glad to see this film getting mentioned in the comments. Hardly anyone knows it (not helped by no region 2 release) and it is wonderful. Newman looks like he's having the best time sparring with Jessica Tandy and Bruce Willis, but proves his worth in the scene at the old house. Thoroughly recommended even if you have to import it. ... Although not his best, I would have to have his performance as Rocky in Somebody up there likes me somewhere in the top 10. Favourite has to be the Hustler, he without doubt should have got the oscar for that. Giving it to him for Color of Money went some way to rectifying the oversight. ... Read More

| Hollywood very rarely makes a movies for older leading men. |
Paul Newman showed them the error of their ways in 'Nobody's Fool', another stellar performance opposite an equally brilliant Bruce Willis.
