Beasts Of The Southern Wild

Why It Will Win

 Why It Won't Win

1 It’s a stunningly beautiful and timely piece on environmental disaster, poverty, family and growing up. 1 This feels like the annual be-thankful-you’re-nominated nomination for a smaller film with little chance of really winning.
2 The performances are extraordinary and – as we keep repeating – actors are the biggest voting block. 2 It is the second lowest-grossing nominee, and unless you’re The Hurt Locker a low gross usually means low chances.
3 It would send a great signal that indie filmmakers are people too and deserving of serious awards attention. 3 Its defiantly under-signposted plot and understated ending may scupper its chances with the Academy, which famously prefers its subtlety to be overstated.

1 RE:
L: BenTramer This year's Oscars is The Bossy Women Oscars - Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty, Sally Field in Lincoln and Helen Mirren in Hitchcock. They feature in feminist revisions of history saying that Abraham Lincoln, Alfred Hitchcock and Seal Team Six couldn't have done anything without female help. Hmm, dubious. ut it is a fact that Mirren's character was the rock upon which Hitchcock would lean, and there were many, many women involved in the hunt for Osama bin Laden. So yeah, women serve just as much purpose as men in the realms of intelligence gathering and the entertainment business. Yeah, shocking I know. More

8 Difficult to see, the future is
I've never known an Oscar season quite like this one, in my time anyway. The praise seems pretty much spread across all the nominees. If Affleck had been nominated for Directing, then it wouldn't be so hard to say, but for the first time I'm left unable to even guess what's going to win the Best Pic Oscar. More
