Oscar Nominees 2012: Best Supporting Actress | Octavia Spencer (The Help)
Octavia Spencer (The Help)

Why She Will Win

With a win at the SAG Awards, Spencer is the form candidate. That ceremony signposted Melissa Yeo and Mo’nique’s Oscars and could repeat the soothsaying act this year.
She kicks bigotry square in the keester as blunt-spoken maid Minny Jackson. It’s a pyrotechnic-filled role (written for her), sure, but boy does she light the fuse.
Only a couple of years ago Spencer was playing “Bank Co-Worker #1” in Drag Me To Hell, so a win would make for a Hollywood tale to encourage any young up-and-comer.

 Why She Won't Win

Jessica Chastain’s presence could split The Help’s vote and take away from Spencer’s chances.
Spencer is an unknown commodity to many voters and the award has tended to go to bigger names. Even Mo’Nique, the least-familiar winner of recent years, has her own chat show in the US.
Spencer’s character made a chocolate pie with poo in it. Like, eww.

Bérénice Bejo not being nominated for Best Actress is baffling. I guess they had to make it easier for Meryl "nominated for reading her shopping list" Streep to win. Also, Melissa Yeo? Is that Michelle Yeo's sister? More
