Oscar Nominees 2012: Best Supporting Actor | Nick Nolte (Warrior)
Nick Nolte (Warrior)

Why He Will Win

Troubled characters have ruled a category that’s been littered with Nazis, meth vials, corpses and cattle guns in recent years. This should stand Nick Nolte, the alcoholic at the heart of Warrior, in good stead.
Nolte’s been nominated twice before, for Affliction and The Prince Of Tides, but came up empty-handed so it could be his time. His Captain Ahab impression in Warrior is also worth some kind of award all by itself.
His acceptance speech would be amazing.

 Why He Won't Win

Warrior, while critically admired, has been largely overlooked during awards season. Is it high enough on Academy members’ radar for Nolte to register?
While Hollywood loves the idea of a reformed hellraiser playing another former hellraiser, that wasn’t enough to get Mickey Rourke over the line with The Wrestler in 2008 – and that was a similar but showier role.
His acceptance speech would be terrifying.
