Oscar Nominees 2012: Best Supporting Actor | Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close)
Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close)

Why He Will Win

At 82, von Sydow is still a force of nature up on the big screen. His craggy features lend Stephen Daldry’s film gravitas beyond measure, while his mute stoicism in the film brings back fond memories of masterpieces of yore.
Like Plummer, the legendary Scandinavian hasn’t received the Oscar plaudits his illustrious career has deserved. The Academy probably wishes it could turn back the clock to garland his great Bergman collaborations rather than this schmaltzy drama, but may feel it’s better late than never.
He’s Ming the Merciless. He can make people vote for him with his mind.

 Why He Won't Win

Performances aside, the quest to find someone with something nice about the film would, in itself, make a better film - especially if you threw in some dragons.
Will Oscars go to two actors with no spoken dialogue in the same year? Doubtful – and between Von Sydow and Dujardin, the latter has the stronger case.
If there’s a lifetime achievement vote this year it’s going to Christopher Plummer.
