Oscar Nominees 2012: Best Original Screenplay | The Artist (Michel Hazanavicius)
The Artist (Michel Hazanavicius)

Why He Will Win

It’s a heck of an achievement to make a silent movie in this day and age, and Hazanavicius’ story is beautifully told – and without needing dialogue, which is even harder.
The Artist has all the momentum behind it going into the Oscars, which is a much greater factor in its favour than a Writers Guild nod would be (which it wasn’t eligible for so, y’know, we can’t draw anything from that omission).
His script is probably the most eco-friendly of the lot: without all that double-spaced dialogue, and at a lean 94 minutes, it must’ve used less paper.

 Why He Won't Win

The Academy might want to spread the Oscar love and not just give everything to The Artist.
He’s French. The Academy will eat French food, but they have to draw the line somewhere.
It doesn’t have any dialogue; how can it win when it doesn’t have any dialogue?
