Oscar Nominees 2012: Best Original Screenplay | Margin Call (J.C. Chandor)
Margin Call (J.C. Chandor)

Why He Will Win

Topical, tough subject – the banking crisis – combines with an intelligent and balanced approach: it’s got to be in with a chance.
It has a lot of Academy members in the cast. If they all vote for it, that could be enough.
Hollywood’s famously liberal-media, innit, so it must hate Wall Street and this might be seen as banker bashing.

 Why He Won't Win

Hollywood doesn’t really hate Wall Street: there are too many rich people there.
The film didn’t make much of an impact box-office wise and didn’t land any Acting nominations, which is a bad sign given the calibre of the cast. And it’s only Chandor’s first feature film, so he might have to build up more steam for next time.
It’s entirely possible that the finance bits will put voters off. It’s all a bit, well, complicated, isn’t it?
