Oscar Nominees 2012: Best Original Screenplay | A Separation (Asghar Farhadi)
A Separation (Asghar Farhadi)

Why He Will Win

It takes an exceptional script for a foreign film to be nominated in this category; maybe it’s sufficiently exceptional to turn that into a win.
This is the most buzzed-about thing to come out of Iran since Ahmadinejad – only it’s like the opposite of him, since everyone likes A Separation.
It deals with universal themes, and the writing is sufficiently good that anyone can appreciate it – with Iranian or not. And foreign films, perhaps surprisingly, have done proportionately better in the Screenplay category than in any other bar Costumes (apart from the Foreign Film category, where they consistently do well. Which is weird.).

 Why He Won't Win

While it’s possible to win a Screenplay Oscar for a foreign language film (the first was back in 1945 with Marie-Louise) it’s pretty rare. The last was Talk To Her in 2002, so it’s been a while.
That whole “axis of evil” thing may prevent Republican-leaning Academy voters from getting behind it.
Dude, it’s in an entirely different language! What’s that about?
