Oscar Nominees 2012: Best Adapted Screenplay | Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Bridget O'Connor, Peter Straughan)
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Bridget O'Connor, Peter Straughan)

Why They Will Win

Given that this was previously a six-hour TV drama, the screenwriters have done impressive work to get it down to two without ever feeling rushed.
It respects the intelligence of the viewer, never over-explaining or slowing to let them catch up.
It delivers lots of juicy roles for actors, the biggest voting block in the Academy.

 Why They Won't Win

The film got hardly any nominations – just this, Oldman and the score – which bodes ill.
It may be too British and too muted in tone. All those mustards and greys – it’s just such a downer, dude.
If you’re not familiar with the source material, that title’s even more difficult to remember than Martha Marcy May Whatever – and if you’re not paying attention, whole swathes of the film may have passed you by.
