The Last Emperor (1987)
What is it? Biopic of Pu Yi, last Emperor of China, who ascended the throne aged 3 only for the Communist revolution to overturn all the certainties he had been taught and throw his life into chaos.
Why did it win? Epic, sweeping, glorious looking, historically significant - sing it with us now. Cut a slice through this one and you'll find "Oscar" written in huge letters. In fact, take a sample of its blood, examine it under a microscope and the same thing is written on every cell. Surely if you've read this far you know the drill by now.
Did it deserve to win? OK, we never really expected Evil Dead II or Robocop or Dirty Dancing or The Lost Boys to win an Oscar. But The Untouchables, Raising Arizona, Wall St and Full Metal Jacket were also out this year and should have been nominated; The Princess Bride, Roxanne, Withnail & I and Good Morning Vietnam have also lasted better than Bertolucci's admittedly pretty film.
Worth a look? Put it on in the background of a party for beautiful images and an interesting talking point.
