PLATOON (1986)

What is it? Oliver Stone's Vietnam-set tale of a young volunteer (Charlie Sheen) torn between his two commanding officers: the dreamy, humanist Elias (Willem Dafoe) and the tough, battle-scarred Barnes (Tom Berenger). Cue existential crisis. Also, napalm.

Why did it win? Because it's, like, all about the duality of man and a struggle for the soul of America. Also, it's got men with big guns running around the jungle, and Predator hadn't been made yet so Hollywood was feeling a strange lack that they couldn't quite explain. Also, it was probably the best Vietnam film since the (overlooked, remember) Apocalypse Now.

Did it deserve to win? Clearly the really deserving winner this year was Big Trouble In Little China. No, just kidding: Platoon's worthy. But what a year: The Mission. Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Stand By Me, Top Gun, Salvador, Manhunter, The Fly, The Colour of Money, Blue Velvet and Aliens.

Worth a look? Oh yes, preferably while kneeling with hands thrown in the air.
