GANDHI (1982)

What is it? Biopic of Mahatma Gandhi (Ben Kingsley), the legendary leader of India's independence movement who famously advocated non-violence and made it work.

Why did it win? It's, like, really epic (300,000 extras appear in the funeral scene), it's based on a true story and it's about a saintly figure, so all the ingredients were there. It's also really, really good, which doesn't hurt, managing to condense an extraordinary life into a running time that's just about bearable.

Did it deserve to win? This was one of those hella good years: E.T., Tootsie, The Verdict, Fitzcarraldo, First Blood, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, First Blood and Blade Runner. To be honest, looking deep in our hearts we think that E.T. or Blade Runner should've won, and if you put a blaster to our head, we'd say Blade Runner.

Worth a look? Yes, as long as you've stocked up on snacks and gone to the toilet first.
