ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (1975)

What is it? Based on Ken Kesey's novel, this is the story of rebellious mental patient Randall P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) who encourages his fellow patients to strike back against the controlling Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher)

Why did it win? Not only did Cuckoo win, but it was only the second film ever (of three) to sweep all five major categories, following It Happened One Night. With its big themes, black comedy, brilliant performances and the manic dynamo that is Jack Nicholson pushing it to greatness, it's not hard to see why the voters loved it really.

Did it deserve to win? On one hand, yes, absolutely. On the other, Jaws, man! Sure, it's not as Oscar-y, but it's fricking Jaws! And then there's Barry Lyndon, and Dog Day Afternoon, and Nashville (all nominated), as well as Picnic at Hanging Rock, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Shampoo, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Day of the Locust, and horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident.

Worth a look? Oh yes - see the legend that is Jack in all its glory.
