HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY (1941)

What is it? John Ford's story of a Welsh valley's descent from pristine rural paradise to despoiled mining pit, told through the lives of the Morgan family.


Why did it win? Because nobody likes a smartarse, Mr Welles, and making a film like you did at the age of 26 is just showing off. Falcon, meanwhile, was too pulpy, Suspicion not quite good enough and the rest rather run-of-the-mill with the Golden Age in full swing. Valley had the requisite epic scope and pastoral nostalgia to sustain a nation that had recently entered World War II as the awards were announced. But really, an outbreak of collective insanity must have had something to do with it.


Did it deserve to win? Oh definitely, with its epic sweep, good performances and Ford's expert directi- WAIT A COTTON-PICKIN' MINUTE! Is that Citizen Kane among the defeated nominees? Heck, is that The Maltese Falcon next to it, flanked by Blossoms in the Dust and Suspicion? We take it all back - Valley's OK, but next to the Greatest Film Ever Made, it's eminently forgettable.


Worth a look? Go watch Citizen Kane instead and we'll pretend you didn't ask.
