Ten Obscure Horror Movies That Should Be Remade
Forget the classics, why not remake movies that were either a) obscure, b) didn't fulfil their promise, or c) weren't that good first time around?

With the astounding success of the Friday The 13th remake at the US box office this weekend, you can bet your bottom dollar that Hollywood execs are, even as we type, poring over their horror back catalogues to see what else they can plunder, spruce up and repackage. But we say enough with remaking the classics: instead, why not remake movies that were either a) obscure, b) didn't fulfil their promise, or c) weren't that good first time around? Here are just ten to get you started. And, oh yeah, spoilers ahoy!

Demons (1985) | Demons (1985)
PICTURED Demons (1985)

Demons (1985)

Barmy Italian horror directed by Lamberto Bava (son of Mario), in which a group of unfortunate cinemagoers are turned, one by one, into drooling, snarling, rabid demons. And then, to make matters worse, the exits are sealed. Notable for a surplus of grisly effects, a surfeit of logic, and an unsentimental attitude towards major characters, it's hugely enjoyable but could do with, well, an actual plot. A director like Louis Leterrier could handle the action with aplomb, and may even be able to use the cinema setting to comment on the effects of screen violence - Funny Games with snarling, yellow-eyed devils? We're so there.

4 Prince of Darkness?
Posted on Monday February 23, 2009, 18:03 by Sappy
As in John Carpenter. Horribly dated piece of Horror-Cheese, but very cool plot. Something along the lines of a church (???) full of archetypes all having the same dream about the end of the world, brought about by a portal to another dimension that they're all investigating. It's got karate, zombie-inducing posessions, and a pinch of time travel, if memory serves! Read More

A shocker remake? Ace! I remember when X-Files started it drove me nuts trying to work out where i had seen Mitch Pilleggi before!!! I'd like to see Wes Craven's Deadly friend, cheesy but i reckon it has a load of potential in the right hands!! A new version of Dolls!!??!....anything with those porcelain dolls coming to life freaks me out! Read More

Posted on Friday February 20, 2009, 15:58 by losthighway
I have this film on VHS, although it's shown quite regularly on the Horror Channel. It was cut by 42secs on video in the UK - not sure what was cut though tbh. Plus, it's supposed to be based on the Shaun Hutson novel but isn't that faithful as I recall...I HATE slugs, they make my skin crawl so why on earth I felt the need to own a film about killer ones, I'll never know!!?? The things we watch as kids eh! Interesting factoid... The director of Slugs, Juan Piquer, also directed the horror cult classic 'Pieces', which was released on Grindhouse DVD over in the States late last year and is definately worth picking up. It's a 2-discer and is SO bad it's hilarious. Seriously, it's a film that really should be seen if you're a true horror fan! :) Read More

Glad I could help! I believe Hutson disowned it, and considering the man isn't exactly Shakespeare himself, I guess that says a lot...   Oh, and Wes Craven just announced he's working on remakes of Shocker and People Under The Stairs. www.joblo.com/arrow/index.php?id=15655 Read More

Would love to see this remade if only to mindf&ck all the unsuspecting teens that would go and see it! Decent casting of the lead (and bodycasting?!) would be required though. Watched it after seeing a documentary on slasher flicks and even though I knew the outcome it is still very disturbing. Read More

12 Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark
Posted on Thursday February 19, 2009, 13:15 by evs75
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark...this was a 70's horror film about a housewife who thinks she hears things in a house coming from a sealed up fireplace, before long, the monkey like creatures with red shrivelled heads, start to terrorise the housewife when she sleeps. They knock an ashtray from her night stand in the middle of the night; they tug at her skirt and won't let go; they turn off the lights in the bathroom while she's showering - and go at her with a straight razor. Eventually they get her and drag her into the fireplace and the husband gets there too late...S**T SCARY...I CAKED MY PANTS (as a child obviously!!!) But nobody, especially not the work-consumed Alex, believes Sally's fantastic story that there are tiny monsters inhabiting the house; and worse - that they want to take "her spirit." Read More

That is indeed an excellent film with slug-like beasties in it. I don't know why that didn't initially leap to mind when the question was first posed. That must be the one. A key 'influence' on Slither, I'd imagine, so we've already kind of had a remake of it... Read More

Killer Klowns is a good call....no remake could be as dementedly as brilliant as the original Demons and I would settle for a re-release rather than remake of Street Trash which I remember seeing as a teenager...do I really remember a game of piggy in the middle with someones winky??? Read More

20 Night of the Creeps

Night of the creeps needs to be either re-released or re-made, it is an excellent comedy horror from Director Fred (Monster Squad) Dekker (who needs to make more movies). Sadly there is only one existing print , I was lucky enough to catch a showing of it at a horror festival last October. I highly recommend it Read More

This would make a brilliant remake, as long as you ignore that it's a horrible Alien rip off. The original's storyline and setting was cool, however the monster SFX were just so horrible, with a bit of an update it could be awesome. AWESOME! Read More

27 Or...
Posted on Tuesday February 17, 2009, 13:11 by Cadiliniel
...how about the remakes stop and up-and-coming horror filmmakers get thier chance to make a mark on the genre?! I know so many filmmakers who make interesting, if not necessarily original, horror films who will never get the attention they deserve when all studios are interested in is remaking films people already love enough. Also, Demons? NO. The film does not need to be remade at all! I'm baffled that Empire has even dedicated a feature to 'horror movies that *should* be remade'. How about 'horror filmmakers who should have more attention paid to them' or 'horror films that should never have been remade in the first place' or, just plain 'horror shouldn't be remade'. You hit the nail on the head there. While I couldn't imagine cancelling my subscription, the cheeriness with which Empire has started greeting every remake announcement for the last couple of years has left me both baffled and a little depressed. I know we've always had remakes throughout cinema history, and there are several examples that are every bit as interesting as (or occasionally superior to) the original movie. But the volume and frequency of remakes/reboots/reimaginings in this last decade has become utterly ludicrous. Whether you have only the tiniest emotional attachment to the source material or have never even heard of it, the fact that Empire seems to be constantly bending over backwards to justify and make excuses for yet another bloody remake is a little soul-destroying. We should be doing everything we can to encourage filmmakers to give us new experiences, rather than become their enablers by acting as enthusiastic apologists for their lack of fresh ideas. Rant over.Read More

40 Phase IV
Posted on Monday February 16, 2009, 23:34 by The Equalizer
I saw Phase IV as a lad on telly many many moons ago. It scared the bejabers out of me! What a good film though. I spent many a year trying to locate it, and so far I have only heard rumour of it on IMDB - so how did Empire get hold of the cover sheet? One of the best bits was when you realised the ants were actually going to win. Damn their alien modified brains! When they built shiny sided ant-hills to heat-out the scientists was inspirationaly. It'd look great with tonnes of our six-legged friends on HD. David Attenborough eat your heart out! Read More

41 Why???
Posted on Monday February 16, 2009, 22:39 by John76
Why does Empire think it's okay to remake anything?! I don't care how shitty the original effects/acting/plot were - shouldn't we as moviegoers be demanding fresh(ish?) ideas instead of reheated shite? This new attitude of Empire pisses me off no end. No wonder I've stopped buying the mag. Read More

45 My suggestions
Posted on Monday February 16, 2009, 19:34 by TheMadFatChickKiller
Titan Find (it's the closest you get to remaking Alien, erm, without actually remaking Alien), Robert Rodriguez to direct. Lifeforce - gratuitous nudity, campy acting, loads of b and c list British Actors, c'mon Edgar Wright, THIS is the movie you should be making. Night of the Lepus, which I can explain in four words. Giant. Killer. Fucking. Rabbits. Joe Dante would be perfect. Read More

I remember a lot of these movies from my younger days, but the one that really sticks out in my mind as deserving of a remake is 1975's Race With The Devil. Peter Fonda and Warren Oates being chased across the country in their campervan by satanists - what a pitch. Great car chases, a terrifying scene involving rattlesnakes, and a brilliantly grim ending. Sadly, it doesn't all quite add up to the sum of its parts, but it's a cracking little genre flick and I've been hoping for a remake for ages. My vote for director would have to be Tarantino, if only to atone for Death Proof. Read More

I totally thought the ultra-classic House starring the unflinching George Wendt, who knows EXACTLY what movie he's in. Stuffed sword fish coming to life, flying garden tools, and let's not forget the movie's greatest aspect, Vietnam flashbacks supported by Bull from Night Court. I'd love to see this remade, but without any new technology. I want the monsters to be foam rubber, and strings to be showing. Make it happen hollywood. I'll accept circus peanuts as payment. SHOCKER and WAXWORK... The latter is now available in a special edition DVD and the latter keeps popping up on the Horror Channel every now and again. As a child I remember going to a friend's house and they had rented Shocker on VHS, his mum rang mine to ask if I could watch it with them and she said no! :( Can't recall when I finally got around to seeing it but I do still have the novelisation of it somewhere and read that instead beforehand. Well there's a will, there's a way! ;) It was a decent film as I recall, must have a look on Amazon! Read More

There's so many obscure horror films from the 80's that were downright awful, but when i was young i loved going to the horror section in xtravision (blockbuster) and looking at the back of the boxes, seeing the pictures of the really gruesome effects! In fact, even now i love looking at really random direct to dvd film cases and reading the description, most recent examples being Zombies On A Plane and I Am Omega starring Mark Dacascos! Read More

51 Dark Night of the Scarecrow
Posted on Monday February 16, 2009, 16:15 by Najemikon
I've never seen Dark Night of the Scarecrow but my parents raved about it and indeed a quick search in Google shows this 1981 TV movie is much loved, with a cracking premise. A retarded man (Larry Drake, I think) tries to hide from a lynch mob by disguising himself as a scarecrow. They find him and murder him, but he comes back for revenge. A remake would at least prompt a DVD release of the original so I could finally see the damn thing! I always liked Homebodies. That could do with an update too. Read More

Althought it isnt really a horror film i really think an update of THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE is long over due!!! Just imagine what a gothic grand guignol chilling masterpiece Guillermo Del Toro could turn this back and white chiller into!!!!
