Given that writer/director Michael Davis’ entire m.o. with Shoot ‘Em Up was to come up with new and interesting ways for people to die in gun battles, there’s a lot of competition for this coveted spot. Death by carrot, anyone? But he saves the best for last, when Clive Owen’s Mr. Smith dispatches Paul Giamatti’s Mr. Hertz by shooting him… without a gun. Having had his fingers broken by Hertz, Smith retreats to a living room and the warmth of a roaring fire. Gloating, Hertz stands over him, but can’t resist a quick spot of monologuing. “Tell me I’m dead on about you,” he says. “Say that again,” asks Smith. “Tell me I’m dead –” And that’s when Owen reveals that he’s had five bullets crammed between his fingers, just heating up and ready to be let loose in Giamatti’s chest. OK, so the kill quip is contrived, but for outrageousness and ingenuity, this is hard to beat.
