When Peter Jackson video-introduced some early footage of King Kong at Comic-Con in 2005, he brought his undeniable show-stopper: the fight scene between Kong and not one, not two but three V-Rexes. Its a classic in its own right, with some neat humour (Naomi Watts, helplessly swinging towards the jaws of a waiting Rex, which cant believe its luck), genuine tension and some bruising exchanges. Kong triumphs, naturally, in brutal fashion by pinning the last dinosaur and forcing its jaws apart until they snap like Christian Bale. Its a wonderful moment, because it reminds us that, even after the bonding between Kong and Watts, the big ape is, at heart, still a terrifying beast; and also because of the way he idly plays with the dead dinosaurs jaws afterwards, as if trying to understand how the whole thing works. Its a beautifully observed piece of behaviour, and kudos of course must go to the 1933 original, in which Kong did exactly the same thing.
