From the outset, Katsuhiro Ôtomo's uniquely 1980s dystopian imagining of a Neo Tokyo besieged by biker gangs and home to a group of wrinkly-faced supernatural children establishes a foreboding sense of seriously freaky shit to come. Tetsuo, one of said bikers, has been found to possess the abilities of those godlike kids and is placed under the surveillance in a government facility. Overwhelmed by his newfound abilities and in the face of the guards who keep him captive, he uses his force to wipe out the doctor and watchman in one single thought and flick of the arm. As exploding body matter lands on the ceiling and walls, blood oozes from the massacred body parts down on the patient who caused their destruction. Ewwwwwh! But also, wow.
