To the Wehrmacht, he’s an unerring killing machine, a fearsome instrument of Bible-quoting righteous kills. To us, he’s just plain Barry. But whatever you want to call him, Barry Pepper’s Kraut-cracking sniper is one of Saving Private Ryan’s standout characters, an uncannily good marksman with most of the New Testament consigned to memory. His finest moment comes when Tom Hanks’ Ranger squad comes under fire from a German marksman in the bell tower of a rain-swept Normandy town. Biding his time until the German turns his sights on him, Pepper drills him straight through his telescopic lens. Pepper 1, Goose-stepper 0.
