The beginning of Wolfgang Petersen’s ultimately disappointing sword’n’sandals epic ably sets up the idea that Brad Pitt’s Achilles is the greatest warrior ever seen (of course, that’s not counting Hulk Hogan, but we digress). When King Agamemnon (Brian Cox) and his opposite number, Triopas (Julian Glover) agree to settle the war between Mycenae and Thessalonia by pitting their two best fighters against each other, Triopas calls upon Boagrius (pro wrestler Nathan Jones), a man so big his shadow beats up other shadows for kicks. Aggy calls upon Achilles, a mere stripling of a man – but the battle is over in a trice, with Achilles’ ably dodging Boagrius’ lumbering spear throws, and then pressing X, O, O, O, X, and R2 to perform his signature move: the leap in the air/sword thrust, straight into his bewildered opponent’s neck. Job’s a good 'un.
