No finishing move is better guaranteed to make men wince than this one, even if it does get a pass on moral grounds. On his first night patrolling Detroit’s bad apple streets, The Artist Formerly Known As Alex Murphy foils a rape in progress… by perfectly calibrating his aim and shooting through the woman’s skirt, obliterating her assailant’s meat and two veg. It’ll never stand up in court etc. etc. Of course, a headshot would have worked equally well, but by dispensing poetic justice, the scene is just one of the hints that RoboCop may be more human than he lets on. And, of course, it’s just like Paul Verhoeven to go straight for the bits that really matter.
