When Shane Black set out to write The Last Boy Scout, he intended to make the lead character, Bruce Willis' sleazebag PI, Joe Hallenbeck, something of a mythical figure; an action hero informed by the cinematic legends of the past. This wonderful scene sees a captured Hallenbeck asks one of the goons (the unfortunate Kim Coates) watching him for a cigarette. Instead, he gets a punch. Rinse, and repeat, except now Joe whispers, "If ya touch me again, I’ll kill ya." Coates pays no heed, smacking the fag out of his lips again – but his celebratory laughter is cut short, permanently, when Joe, true to his word, suddenly drives his nose into his brain with the flat of his hand... then he picks up the cigarette and sparks up . In that moment, Willis is as mythic as Marvin, Eastwood, Bogart combined. Job done, Mr. Black.
