Most Downtrodden (Yet Inspiring) Characters In Movie History
The luckless individuals who at least make our lives better
Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire comes out this week, and it's not too much of a spoiler to say that its title character is a girl who has the odds stacked against her - pregnant for the second time following rape by her father, abused by her mother, turfed out of school (and that's just the first fifteen minutes). And yet, somehow, the film is inspiring rather than depressing. In tribute to Precious and survivors like her, here are the movie characters who really had it rough (so not you, Rocky) and still managed to inspire by their example...
Warning: May contain spoilers, and nuts.

Most Downtrodden (Yet Inspiring) Characters In Movie History
Milton Waddams
Office Space (1999)

Why he's so miserable: He was laid off a number of years ago - only no one has told him. His desk's been moved - again and again, each time to a worse position and despite a promise that he wouldn't be moved further. His red stapler has become a symbol of his dwindling sphere of influence, his career as a whole - and when that is taken away, he really goes nuclear. Oh, and he's fat, schlubby, thickly bespecled and cursed with an awful dreary, monotonous voice. We suspect his home life is less than scintillating too.

Why he's inspiring: Despite the odds stacked against him, and his own anti-social - not to say violent - tendencies, Milton remains steadfast in his determination a) not to move desks and b) to keep his red stapler. And come the end of the movie, he's the one drinking cocktails on the beach, so take that, world!

1 Dobby in the Movies

I've never read the books but love the movies-so I always looked at Dobby as the Jar Jar Binks of HP-totally annoying and unnecessary. Based on the movies alone obviously I didn't know his character at all. Read More
